The History of Scotch Whisky

The History of Scotch Whisky

The story of Scotch Whisky begins in the early 15th century, with records documenting the earliest distilling dates back to 1494.

Scotch Whisky became increasingly popular, and it wasn’t long before it attracted the attention of the Scottish Parliament, seeking their cut from a rapidly growing industry, with taxes introduced in 1644.

The 19th century witnessed an explosion of internationally appealing Scotch Whisky, with titans of the industry, Johnnie Walker & James Chivas rising to meteoric international fame and brand notoriety within the industry.

With all success stories; Scotch Whisky experienced more than a spot of good fortune along the way. During the 1880s, the wine and brandy industry suffered total devastation caused by the phylloxera beetle, destroying French vineyards across the entire country. Around the same time, Irish Whiskey was in decline with only a quarter of their distilleries left producing the then most popular spirit in the world. Others misfortune led to the Scotch take over, and the rest is history.

Scotch Whiskies International Appeal

In 2018, Scotch Whisky exports grew by 7.8%. The market grows by single digits, and is vast and well established, outperforming by 200% the entire growth-rate of the UK economy. By comparison, the world automotive industry is worth around $4 trillion each year. It grows at around 2.7% over the same period, which is under a third the growth-rate of Scotch Whisky.

Today, Scotch Whisky exports are valued at a staggering £5 billion each year. There are an estimated twenty million barrels currently being aged throughout Scotland. A jaw-dropping forty-two bottles of Scotch are exported every single second to over one-hundred and seventy different countries around the world.

There has never been a better time to invest in Scotch, as the market is one of the most secure and stable performing over the last century. As more distilleries are coming onto the scene, it’s almost impossible to see the market doing anything else but increase in size and profitability.
